Why Study Bioethics at Goucher?

Students will work toward their undergraduate degree at Goucher and take classes toward a Master of Bioethics from the Berman Institute of Bioethics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Offered in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Master of Bioethics (MBE) is an innovative, interdisciplinary and cross-divisional graduate program combining approaches from science and technology, the humanities and arts, and public health and medicine to prepare students from diverse backgrounds to investigate and address the bioethics challenges of professional and civic life.

The Goucher College graduate pathway program with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Master of Bioethics, will provide students with concrete training in the ethics of clinical care, research, science, and public health. The program prepares students to make meaningful contributions at the intersection of health sciences and societal impact while critically engaging in longstanding and emerging ethics issues that have local, national, and global import.

Course Curriculum

The program requires successful completion of a minimum of 64 term credits, including a thesis seminar, and a practicum option. Upon matriculation, each student charts a program of study to meet individual goals. 

Full-time students typically complete the degree over four 8-week academic terms plus a few credits during the summer. Part-time students must complete program requirements within four years.

In addition to formal coursework, practicum, and thesis, all students will participate in a variety of supplemental seminars in bioethics, such as the Berman Institute Noontime Seminar Series, Robert H. Levi Symposium, Shallenberger Lecture in Ethics, and the Sheila Hutzler-Rives Memorial Lecture in Palliative Care. These events allow students to interact with a broad network of national and international leaders in bioethics.
